We Can Help
step by step guide to how we help
As we visit people in their home, we can only help those who live within 30 minutes' drive of a CAP Centre. To find out whether there is a CAP Centre in your area, click here to view our partnership page.
1. Home Visit
Phone 1300 227 000 and select Option 1 to determine whether there is a CAP Centre near you. If so, after you call CAP, a Debt Advisor and Support Worker from the local CAP Centre will visit you in your home.
If you do not live in the catchment area of one of our centres, please click 'Can I Help Myself' in the menu on the right.
2. An Effective Budget
A realistic budget is then worked out at CAP Head Office by prioritising your essential bills, negotiating affordable payments with each creditor and stopping unfair interest and charges where possible. The local Debt Advisor will then visit you again to explain the budget and the payments you will need to make.
3. CAP Account
A CAP Account is then set up for you. This acts like a simple bank account. You will need to make regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments into your account to cover all of your bills and debts. CAP will then distribute this on your behalf. Your CAP Account will also include savings.
5. Insolvency / Bankruptcy
If your debts are very large and you can't pay them off in a reasonable time, CAP's Insolvency department will explain the options, including insolvency and bankruptcy, to help you choose the best way forward.
6. Debt free and Beyond
You will use your CAP Account to make bill and debt repayments while being supported by a team at CAP Head Office until you are debt free. You may keep your CAP Account even after you are debt free.
